Foo Fighters Begin Work on Seventh Studio Album
Shortly following their concert at Wembley Stadium in 2008, the Foo Fighters announced that they would go on hiatus for a while -- After all, they had just played their biggest gig ever and it would be tough to top it. Since then, the band's members have each worked on their own side projects; Taylor Hawkins teamed up with the Coattail Riders, Chris Shiflett with the Dead Peasants and Nate Mendel reunited with the Sunny Day Real Estate. As for Grohl, he formed the "super group" Them Crooked Vultures with Josh Homme and John Paul Jones. The Foo Fighters did reunite for a couple of (very) special events (would you say no to the President?) and made a decent amount of pocket change with their Greatest Hits record last year.
Where does a band go when they've reached their high? Do they burn out or do they fade away?
Last year, Dave Grohl touched upon that while discussing the band's future plans with CNN: "This Greatest Hits record, that's the end of something. It's time to move on into this next chapter or another phase. Maybe it will be different in whatever way. I don't know. It's nice to not know what's going to happen next". In a more recent interview with Rolling Stone, the frontman appeared more certain of their plans by adding "I think this could be our heaviest album yet".
The album is looking very promising as they've teamed up with legendary producer Butch Vig (who worked on their Greatest Hits record). Vig has produced some excellent albums including the Smashing Pumpkins' Siamese Dream, all of Garbage's records (where he also aided with drum work), Green Day's 21st Century Breakdown, and of course, Nirvana's Nevermind. The band is also moving away from their elegant Studio 606 and into Grohl's home. Fifteen songs have been readied and they've hard at work recording the whole thing over the past few days. We're unsure as to how many of the tracks will make the final cut. One thing we do know is that Grohl is consuming a lot of fresh pots once again.
The band, who are very engaged with various social networks across the web, have been releasing photos to their fans of the record's development. The album is scheduled for release in spring 2011. In the meanwhile, enjoy some of the photo highlights below.
UPDATE:The first songs have been revealed - Miss The Misery, Rosemary, These Days, Walk, A matter of Time, Bridge Burning. Also, the pictures suggest that Dave, Chris and Pat will be on guitar.
