Sacha Baron Cohen to star in Queen biopic

Queen's guitarist, Brian May, has announced a slew of new projects for 2011 to celebrate Queen's big 40th anniversary. Among them is a re-issue of Queen's entire back catalog. In addition, the formally-rumored Queen biopic is now official with Sacha Baron Cohen taking lead as the late Freddie Mercury. Brian made the following statement on the official Queen website.

“Work is now fully under way for the much-vaunted feature film on the life of Freddie. Peter Morgan has delivered a first draft of the movie, which everyone is very excited about, and Sacha Baron Cohen is chomping at the bit to get into the role, in a way which certainly would delight Freddie!”

Cohen, who has made a living of playing somewhat eccentric characters, is a perfect fit for the role; His Borat character looking strikingly similar to the former rocker. The film is still ways off with autumn of 2012 being currently penned in as the release date.
