Kurt Cobain may have passed away in the mid nineties, but years later he’s still making music headlines. This month alone, his widow’s estate was broken into, he was the center of Billy Corgan’s recent tangent and April 5th marked the 15th anniversary of his death. This past week, it was announced that Nirvana has a new live DVD set to be released later this year.
The DVD will be based on their performance at Reading Festival in 1992. The event began with Cobain being pushed onto stage in a wheelchair mocking the allegations that he was physically and perhaps mentally ill. Later on in the show, Kurt informed the crowd of the birth of his daughter, Frances Bean, and pleaded with them to chant “We love you Courtney” to show their support.
As far as the music goes, this is classic Nirvana. Don’t expect anything like their MTV Unplugged performance, this is a much louder and grungier sound. In addition to their own songs, they also played a mock cover of “More Than a Feeling” which led into “Smells Like Teen Spirit”. At the end of their set, they proceeded to destroy their instruments and equipment as they played the “Star Spangled Banner”.
The DVD will be in stores in November. Can’t wait that long? No worries we’ve included the bootleg version below.
