Montreal Vans Warped Tour 2011 Highlights

This past Saturday afternoon, thousands of music fans made their way over to Parc Jean-Drapeau to be a part of Vans Warped Tour. Since its inception back in 1995, the tour has featured some of the biggest names in music including Green Day, 30 Seconds to Mars, Fall Out Boy, No Doubt, Rancid and Papa Roach to name a few.

What was once known as more of a punk rock festival, Warped Tour has evolved over time embracing the musical taste of the younger generation that the tour caters to. While there are still punk bands featured on the tour, they now find themselves playing alongside hip hop, screamo, metalcore, rock and electronica bands.

With over 65 bands playing on eight stages; it isn't easy to pick out favorite performances, so instead we've decided to highlight a few bands that stood out from the crowd.

The first time Paramore performed at Warped Tour, they were a little known band from Tennessee -- oh, how the times have changed. After selling millions of CD's and touring the world, Paramore returned to their roots at Warped Tour playing a handful of dates; luckily for us, Montreal was one of those dates.

Playing some of their biggest hits including their latest single, Monster, Paramore was definitely one of the biggest draws of the day. To close out their set, lead singer Hayley Williams invited some fans on stage to help sing their hit song, Misery Business

A Day To Remember

If there is one thing A Day To Remember is known for, it's their live shows; from human hamster balls to massive walls of death, the band members aren't the only ones that put on a show. With fans kicking up dust clouds with the circles pits, A Day To Remember played a solid set including songs like All I Want and All Signs Point To Lauderdale off of their 2010 release, What Separates Me From You.

Last year at Warped, Automatic Loveletter performed as a group and plugged in; this year, they stripped it down -- so much so that it was only front woman Juliette Simms and her acoustic guitar. Performing an intimate set, this acoustic set was a nice change from the testosterone fueled sets from most of the other bands.

Bad Rabbits

My first experience with Bad Rabbits was when they opened up for Travie McCoy earlier this year; when I found out they would be playing Warped this year, you can bet I made sure to circle their set time on my schedule. Unfortunately for them, they were scheduled last up on the Skullcandy Stage and to make matters worse, they were up against Paramore. The good news is, they still were able to garner a nice sized crowd. Those that did catch their performance were dancing away to their soulful, fun, catchy tunes. If you're heading to one of the remaining Warped dates, make sure you check them out, you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Go Radio

Playing one of the earlier sets in the day, Go Radio kicked things off on the Nintendo 3DS Stage. Playing songs like Kill The Beast and Any Other Heart off of their first full length record, Lucky Street, Go Radio were a great start to a day packed with lots of live music.

When photographing live bands, most of the time you spend your time hoping that a band member will do something out of the ordinary that you can capture on film (or in this case, a SD card); but when it comes to Foxy Shazam, you spend your time hoping that the band members stay still long enough to actually capture the moment. From headstands to summersaults, to sitting on keyboards while playing - this band did it all. One couldn't help but notice the smiles in the crowd as well as on the photographers faces. If you want to have a fun time, make sure you check them out.

With a new album set to drop later this year, The Devil Wears Prada was another one of the bands that took to the stage early to get the crowd pumped for all of the bands to follow. Assistant to the Regional Manager off of their album With Roots Above and Branches Below was clearly one of the crowd favorites and a great way to cap off their set.

While Black Veil Brides may not have been a highlight for me musically, visually, they got bonus points for effort.
